Accelerated replacement of a Proprietary MF system in a constrained supply chain environment Dustin Whynman, Carollo Engineers Agenda Project Site Project Background Alternative Analysis Construction and Commissioning 3 Project Background – Columbia WTP Built in 2005 with a capacity of 6 mgd Utilized MF filtration comprised of a Memcor® CMF-L system with six racks Original design was built in a way that allowed expansion out to 20 mgd 5 Project Background – Membrane Racks Skid valves and actuators were reaching the end of their useful life in 2021 Control solenoids are beginning to fail Threaded connections are damaged from repeated module removal and reinstallation 11 Project Background – Membranes The original membranes installed were Memcor L10V – These were replaced in April 2013 with Memcor L10N 12 Project Background – Membranes 32% Decrease in permeability from year 3 to year 8 13 Project Background – Membranes Membrane integrity testes improved from L10V to l10N membranes 14 Project Background – Membranes Plant still required up to 800 pins per year 16 Columbia WTP Veolia wanted to explore replacing the membrane system at Columbia Veolia intended to increase Columbia’s production to 10 mgd by 2026 As demonstrated, Veolia had the following reasons to refresh the system: – Degrading/failing equipment – Degrading membranes – Increased water demands 17 Replace existing membranes and associated components with an aftermarket Memcor CMF-L compatible membrane 3. Replace the existing Memcor with an open-platform membrane rack system 18 Replace existing membranes with all new Memcor L10N modules. 2. Columbia WTP Alternatives Explored Four alternatives were identified 1. Replace the racks with the latest Memcor membrane system 4. Alternative #1 Replace the 8-year-old modules with all new L10N modules – Veolia can expect similar quality and maintenance requirements – This resolves the issue with the degrading membrane integrity, but not failing skid components, and capacity struggles 19 Alternative #2 Replace the existing modules with Scinor SMT600-P23 modules – This module has demonstrated better maintenance records, but for this analysis the same maintenance requirements were assumed 21 Alternative #3 Upgrading to the Memcor CPII system, equipped with Memcor L40N modules – The CPII system and L40N membranes are the modern versions of the CMF-L system and could be considered a “like-for-like” option – The L40N module is a more durable PVDF membrane with significantly more surface area (726 vs 230 ft2) – Smaller footprint, more accessible membrane racks, fewer custom components, and manufacturer support for the foreseeable future 23.
