Reversing the Flow: The Challenges of Starting Up and Operating the Nation’s First Municipal Flow-Reversal RO System

Flow-reversal (FR) RO technology is examined with respect to operational challenges during startup and commissioning of brine concentration systems. Critical startup considerations are identified including membrane preconditioning, pressure vessel sequencing, and flow equalization strategies. Lessons learned from early commissioning experience provide practical guidance for successful facility startup and transition to reliable long-term FR-RO operation in high-recovery brine concentration applications.
